Overview
Fosa I is an artificial pool to the east of the larger ballcourt (Ballcourt 1). The pool continued to fill with water until fairly recently. Excavations (2019 and 2021) in Fosa I sought to discern its function. They revealed that the depression in the terrain was an artificial pool with several plaster linings during the Middle Preclassic period. Thick sterile clay beneath the construction suggests that the pool was originally natural and the plaster linings accentuated its water-capturing capacity. Offerings in the pool revealed that it functioned very similiar to Fosa Y.
